   I’d suggest re-downloading a newer version from Filehippo.com, or using Avast instead (it’s better).

   You can either wait until after the holidays, or you could uninstall, and download again, either way you won’t be losing anything.

   Hmm.. mine keeps doing that occasionally. It says something about the server if that’s what your on about.

   But it always updates itself in the end. Just keep trying to update it every now and again.

   Get rid of AVG and download AVAST which is also Free, and equally as good if not better. AVG has became a pain in the bum. merry Christmas, xxx

   If you receive the “Invalid update control CTF file” message during AVG update, most probably the update control files are corrupted. In this case it is necessary to delete these files. During a next attempt to update AVG, new control files should be downloaded and update process should be completed without any difficulties. Please kindly follow these steps to delete mentioned control files:

   * Download the utility from the link below to your hard drive
   deleteupdatefiles.exe
   * Run the downloaded utility (command line window will appear for a short time)
   * Try to update the AVG program

   If the issue persists, then please follow steps below:

   * Double-click the My computer icon on your desktop (or open Start -> My Computer)
   * Navigate to the following folder:
   o Windows XP / 2000:
   C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication Dataavg8updatedownload *
   o Windows Vista:
   C:ProgramDataavg8updatedownload *
   * Find the avginfoavi.ctf and avginfowin.ctf files and delete them
   * Restart your computer

   * Please note that some folders/files could be hidden. To view hidden files and folders please follow the steps below:

   1. Open the folder options in Windows:

   * Windows XP / 2000:
   Open menu Start> Settings> Control Panel> Folder options
   * Windows Vista:
   Open menu Start> Control Panel> Appearance and Personalization> Folder options

   If it’s the update manager that’s failing, no worries, just try in a little while and it should work. Do you have an automatic update? I do and sometimes it says it’s failing if I didn’t turn on my computer before the scheduled time. It really depends on which part isn’t updating. If nothing else works you can always go to avg.com and try reinstalling it {which of course is what you want to do on Christmas Day}

   when ive had this problem in the past, ive deleted completely from my pc and downloaded it again, then its worked normal.
   also l agree with some of the other answers, avast is far better and is also free if you download the home edition 4.

   Open the avg interface and change the time you have set for automatic update. That worked for me.

    just buy the newer one or keep the one you have untill 2009 then try it again it might update for a new year!

    Alex is right scrub it, then, reload, but, the street says at the moment Avast is the in thing, run, malawarebytes (free),superantispyware(free)and a really quick one is advanced system care (free) from 10bit,(these will take care of the spy/mal side of things) and, the final back up is, run microsoft ‘one care’ once a week these should keep you out of trouble Take Care
