Because adware / spyware / spam / trojans are becoming more prevalent as the amount of PCs in the world increases.

More PCs = more victims = more malware = more antivirus updates

Because if you go to http://symantec.com the virus threat meter is higher at the moment. Also if you’re using avg free the servers are slower to try and tempt you to upgrade to the paid version which is a lot faster.

This is so because as and when more and more Viruses are detected, they are included in the Updates and passed on to the User.

You should thank AVG that atleast they care for you so they are including more and more updates. I am using ESET and I wonder if they ever passed me an update since this March!!!

Every virus has a so called “footprint”. Anti virus programs are looking into all the software on your computer trying to find these footprints.
All known virus footprints are in a table. The table is used by the anti-virus program . There are many new viruses every day. So all these new virus footprints are added to the table. Some tables today contain over 800,000 virus footprints. And the tables are growing every day 🙁

This is the convoluted nature of a Windows operating system:
It’s versatility is it’s Achillies heel.
Want out of this never ending cycle? Get a Mac, or Linux.

Because AVG is becoming more bloated in an attempt to get users to update to the paid version, and even in the paid version the updates are as big and causing many problems.

Consider switching to Avast anti-virus which better definitions, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit built in, faster and more reliable:
