Avira Antivir would be a top contender of being the worlds most powerful antivirus software.

    And it’s free: http://www.free-av.com

However based on my personal experience, I would assume that Avast is considered to be the most beloved Antivirus software just due to the fanatic response it recieves every single day.

Windows utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files
automatically to the System volume information /System Restore folder.

This means that an infected file could be stored there as a backup file,
and most anti-virus programs will be unable to delete these files. You
must disable the System Restore Utility to remove the infected files
from the folder if you use another brand of anti-virus.

However, you do not need to do so if you use Avast to do a boot up scan to remove virus in system restore folder.

The most annoy thing about most anti-virus programs is that sometimes they can detect but cannot remove the virus because access denied.

However, Avast can do a boot time scan before windows start to remove any stubborn viruses/rootkits.

    see comparison

Avast have better detection rates for virus than others

    Avast also have anti-rootkit ability.
