    Avast is the best IMO

and NO, you should never run more than one, apart from possible false alerts, virus checkers are quite hungry on resources and having more than one running will cripple most PC’s

You should only ever have a single Anti Virus , otherwise they can interfere with each other, slow the computer down and generate a lot of false positives as they detect virus like behaviour in each other’s scanners.
As for which is best its a matter of debate but probably the best 3 are Avira, Avast and AVG.

EDIT – Michael (+1) posted while I was typing

only one antivirus running, they will not work together and can cause damage to your computer, just use one.

the best anti virus you can have, is a operating system that is virus free and don’t need to use anti virus software Now let me explain one thing to you, Anti Virus software is only as good as the last known viruses, being that there are over a 1000 viruses being sent out every day, anti virus software companies can’t and won’t keep up with them they have admitted that,

Being that there are over 3 million window computers world wide, that are Bot Nets yours could be included, that are being controlled by hackers sending Spam and viruses, it is no wonder they can’t keep up, If you want a virus free computer then move off windows and use a virus free operating system, They are free to download and use, with all the free application software you will ever need
there are 100’s of alternative computer operating systems available to you

The best free anti-virus I have found is Avast! Antivirus, they also have a Professional pay for version on their website. Can’t fault it, as I use to have AVG Antivirus on my machine and the level of protection it gave was abysmal compared to Avast. Of course you get more protection if you do purchase the Professional version, but that’s pretty much the same with most Antivirus programs these days.

The best Anti-virus overall is Kaspersky for personal use, but you have to pay for that version once a year. I can wholeheartedly recommend it if you do decide at a later stage to go down the paid for Antivirus route.

You can’t have more than one Anti-virus program running on your system, as they will conflict with each other and slow down your PC, possibly making it unstable or crashing it regularly. You can have an Antivirus program and an Anti-Spyware/Malware program running on your PC. I would recommend Malwarebyte Antimalware, as its pretty thorough on Full Scan mode and that can take a while to complete if you have a lot of files.

    Avast is available here: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
Malwarebytes Anti-malware is available here: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

    Hope that answers your question.
