What is the purpose of updating anti-virus software exactly ?

okay some pple would say because it would detect the latest viruses.
but wouldn’t the anti-virus dtect the virus even without updating ?

    Well new Viruses are being made everyday. They have to update the detections to protect you. The antivirus won’t know if its a virus or not.

    Anti-viruses detect malware by examining it looking for “signatures”, strings of bytes that it’s known to have. Not only does new malware have new signatures, but even existing malware can change, intentionally or unintentionally, requiring new signatures.

    Also, the removal techniques for existing malware change as the malware itself is changed by malware creators.
