then go and get avast for full time protection,
you can not get a better anti virus system for free.
it has many features you will have to pay for in other systems.

just re-register at the end of the year to get another one year licence.

Avast! Home Edition, re-register once a year for free, doesn’t slow down your computer at all! Be sure to disable sounds.

Unfortunately pretty much all antivirus software will slow down your computer. Avira is pretty good, though, as is Avast. They’re both free and very good at what they do.
