Do everything, buy it and fill all the info out. Just makes sure to send the verification of purchase to HIS e-mail rather then yours. Then tell him to get into his email on Christmas or whenever and it will have a link to the download. Or should. If it doesn’t the Verify Email with have the Key in it so either way he can download it onto his computer.
Also, i suggest Norton Antivirus. If you didn’t already have something int mind.

You do not need to. Get him to download AVG free from http://free.avg.com.

Get him to download a trial version then buy it and ship it to him and he can use the key on the box.

Why don’t you just send him the link to to download site?
Then he can jump right in & get it installed.
Avast and AVG are popular, but add this to his (& your) counter-measures arsenal:
    Sandboxie (http://www.sandboxie.com/)
runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.
    Use it for:
Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.

Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don’t leak into Windows.

Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can’t break out of the sandbox and can’t infect your real system.
    Freeware.
Not overly difficult to use. Don’t presume you can do just anything as it does have limits; listen to ‘Security Now’ #174 for more details (http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm)

Not for 64 bit Vista platform.

I agree with Colinc. AVG has great Ant Spyware and Anti-Virus Ware for Free. When it comes to software to protect your computers, there is a lot of great stuff out there for FREE.

Save the money on this and buy him something else. You could personalize stuff on Zazzle.com for him.

    Good luck
