Trust me…….Avast is the BEST! Mcafee and symantec gobble up resources and slow your pc down horribly. Avast does not slow your pc down. And it works. I”ve been using it for 2 years and haven’t had anymore trouble with viruses. Give it a try. Delete mcafee and symantec off your pc and reboot before you load it down though.

Avast Home edition, it is maintained along side 3 other ones that are not free, and it is easy to use, fast, and very effective. all you need to do is register it ( for free ) before the 60 day trial is over

Yes they are. For example, AVG was introduced as a completely free program. They now offer more features in the paid version but the free version uses the same engine as the paid one.

There are plentiy of comapison tests done – http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=antivirus+comparison – between the various antivirus programs and, depending on who does the tests and what test suite they use, the order in which they finish the tests always varies but none are particularly bad.

I’ve been using the free AVG edition for around 10 years, and never had a virus on any machine I’ve installed it on, so I always recommend it. Other people prefer Avast or one of the others. The “best” generally depends on what people personally prefer and the questions usually end up like the “best OS” or “best browser” arguments.

At work we use McAfee to protect thousands of computers and that works very well too. As they have to scan your computer files, they all slow down your computer to a degree.

If you can not afford a retail security suite ( anti virus, anti spy ware, fire wall, etc.) the freeware is a blessing & the folks who make it available deserve appreciation. However they do not surpass the quality retail suites ( Norton, Kaperski, Mcafee, Trend Micro, etc.) Sounds good to say otherwise but it is not so.

AVG,Avast,Avira are good anti virus freeware
    Malwarebytes,Superantispyware are good anti malware
    Comodo is a good firewall

The above are all freeware and are available @ download.com . If you go there you might want to pick up C Cleaner to help keep the clutter out of your computer.

Also if you spend most of your time on a user account without administrative privledge & only use your administrators account wnen necessary that will help a bunch.

    HAVE FUN

Payed for Anti-Virus offers more features then the free version, and of course it does otherwise no one would buy the program.

Yes, There are many good antivirus programs along with some other security programs. I will recommend the following security programs :–

    1. Kaspersky antivirus for the viruses issues
    2. Malwarebytes for the malwares issues
    3. Superantispyware for the spywaers issues.

Please update all these above softwares before start the scanning process.
