Avast sucks. Get AVG Free. Avast was probably using a lot of memory. AVG uses very little.

Avast doesn’t suck! It’s very reliable and has constant updates. It says it’s compliant with Windows ME. Have you tried an uninstall/re-install?

I did a little bit of searching on the Internet and I couldn’t find no free anti-virus software. I am currently using CA which is only for Windows Vista or Windows XP versions.

I’m not for sure if Windows Defender is for Windows Me or not but it’s worth a try.

I had McAfee software and I was using it to bridge on Halo 2 (Xbox live) and I noticed that my computer was running slow than it once was, at the point were I thought I should change ISP’s because it was really bad. I called them up and come to find out it was the software so I removed and found another.

Also, with your download speed (dial-up) it would take a while for it to download a ‘good’ software. But if it truly is a good software it’ll only be like a 30 – 90 day trial. So, eventually your going to have to pay.

If worse comes to worse try and look up a anti-software on Limewire. Although this isn’t recommended ’cause the file itself could contain a virus. But if it don’t have a virus then your good to go.

    Good luck!

    1. If you are on dial up, you probably do not need to worry about getting viruses from the internet. Any discs that you play on it would be your primary concern.
    2. Did you uninstall your old antivirus? Often times two AV do not play well in the same sandbox and will cause problems like this.
    3. Are you using an antispyware product also? If so, make sure that they will work together. Spysweeper and Computer Associates products do not work well together since Spysweeper recently made upgrades to their product. This could be the case for your programs also.
    4. Make sure that you DO have an antispyware. Spyware will plug up your computer like there is no tomorrow.
    5. Do you have enough RAM to run all of your applications? Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and look at your performance. If you CPU usage is extremely high, you may not have enough memory in your PC, or have too many applications or processes open.

    I hope this helps.
