AVG and AVASt are both free and very good. I wouldn’t use a paid for one they get too bloated and suck up too much recource in order to justify their pricing.

You can get either from http://www.filehippo.com or http://www.download.com

As far as i am concerned there is no such thing as a best free. All the free ones have security holes in them or the wouldn’t be free. But in my years of experience if i absolutely had to pick a free one it would be Avira. But i don’t do free because i have already learned the hard way about them. Trend micro’ AVG’ AVAST are three of the worst. More PC’s get infected with these 3 than any other. Mostly because of there inability to withstand a attack from a hacker. Any 15 year old with just a little skill can get right past them and right to your hard drive without even being detected. At least until it’s to late. They don’t hold up very well under virus or Trojan attack either. The best paid one you will find is Kaspersky. It does what even some other paid ones don’t do. The job of a good anti virus isn’t to detect after the virus has already gotten to your hard drive and system files. After it enters and attaches it’s self to your system files it’s to late. It’s job is to stop it at the door before it ever enters. Right now Kaspersky is the only one doing that. Neither does it use a huge amount of systems resources ie” Memory. By the time you download a free AV then a fire wall’ then a real time anti spy like spy ware terminator you will use way more memory than you would downloading a all in one like Kaspersky and then just something to back it up like Super anti spy ware & spy ware blaster. Bit Defender is good but it uses to much memory. 2 times more than Kaspersky.

I would have to agree with Lex about the free software. It is always lacking in one way or another. But if you find where its lacking and fill that gap then you can get good free protection. Just not as good as the paid. My pick for best overall is Norton Internet Security2009. Kaspersky is another good one. But Norton edges it out it several areas. You only have to go to Kaspersky web site to see that. When they Compare Security Suites they compare Kaspersky2009 to Norton2008 there is good reason for that. Norton2009 is something they don’t want to compare specs to. But in buying a new program Norton, Kaspersky, Nod32, Avira paid, all give good protection.
