What are the best FREE (no trials or limited use) anti-virus programs?

Hi:
I have a state-of-the-art laptop from 2002. I was wondering which is the best (and FREE) anti-virus that consumes the least resources on my machine, since I have ancient hardware?
Thanks!

Well, AVG is resource heavy. Avast has not so good detection rate. Avira Antivirus is the lesser of 3 devils. I like it, fast, responsive, it doesn’t bother me while updating. 90%+ Detection rate.

There’s a couple of good ones, including Avira and Avast and AVG.

I think Avira uses the least resources but has the most ads.

Avast is the best free antivirus that uses almost no system ressources. It detects more viruses than Norton and is totally free. Each 10 months though, you need to register back on their official website to get another product key. But the operation is flawless and it doesn’t take much time. *Registration is always free.

All of the people around me recommend it and it’s way better than other anti-virus software. And do not forget: IT DOESN’T USE A LOT OF RESSOURCES.

The other posts talked about Avira, but I never heard about it. Still, here is the link if you want to try it out:

*I’ve been using Avast for years.
