I would try AVG first… it’s supposed to be as good as you can get for free. Also get Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. Last but not least get Secunia PSI. All of these are free. Windows Defender works but I wouldn’t totally depend on it. And ya’ might consider using a different firewall than Windows!

I think you should use ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 to remove the infections, it is free for one month.

Then just uninstall NOD32 if you don’t want to pay for an anti-virus software (after trial expires). I personally think that ESET NOD32 is one of the best at this moment. From free ones, you may use Avast, AVG or Avira.

I changed to Avast a few months ago, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

In general, with the exception of Firewalls, where Computer Security is concerned, Free is bad. Free generally means useless. If it’s not a trial version designed to convince you to buy the “real thing”, you should avoid it.

As for everyone and their uncle recommending AVGFree…avoid it as if your life depended on it. THAT particular program has a detection rate in the 60% range, and anything under 80% is considered unacceptable. The irony is that the paid for big brother (AVG) is a decent second tier program.

    Good Luck!

AVG is the best free anti-virus I have ever used. It has:

    Anti-Virus
    Anti-Spyware
    LinkScanner (scans a Google search)
    E-mail Scanner
Resident Shield (When you search a website, it will block any viruses, spyware, etc. from getting in your computer.)
Update Manager (Lets it automatically update so you don’t have to)

Get it all free at http://free.avg.com

It has been working for me since 2007 and has kept me virus free since. I highly recommend it. 🙂

You might have to download one in safe mode.

    You need 1 anti virus.
1 firewall. they are in the above.

If you can not get an anti virus to download, there is a malware remover. I have been reading about it.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org
That is a remover only. It will not protect your computer. It is a good thing to have along with an anti virus and a firewall.

After it removes the viruses, you could download the anti virus and firewall.

It is amazing to me how people continue to lie about AVG free and what it will do. You can go right here on there own main page and see for yourself what AVG has and doesn’t have.

    http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

It’s about as sorry as it gets. With it not having root kit protection it is worthless. Over half of the viruses and other bad stuff comes in the form of a root kit. AVG also struggles removing Mal ware. Save yourself some big problems and stay away from AVG. Also, Pay no attention to the AVG fanatic pushers. There either spammers or people who’s computers are infected and they don’t even know it.

As a matter of fact all free AV’s have there problems. Avast, No heuristic scanning except for E mail in the free version. You go to a page that is infected or download something that is infected that way and Avast will not remove it. Most likely will not detect it.

Avira, Good detection and removal, BUT, It has problems with updates and faults positives. So all in all, ALL free AV’s are turds. All you have to do is figure out which one stinks the least.

So if it has to be free, Pick your poison, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

I haven’t told you anything here that you can’t research and find out for yourself. Don’t pay attention to people on here. Most of them will tell you half truths and whole lies. There are some here that will tell you the truth. But it’s hard to tell who is who. Research it yourself.
