How does the chat feature on Facebook work?
I’m a bit confused about it. I just joined Facebook yesterday and am not it right now and where it says chat at the bottom it has a (1) I pressed on it and it says my friends name and yeah does that mean I have a message or something or simply that she is online? I’m confused. Its a stupid question but I’m new to facebook. Thanks.

It means You Have One Friend Online.
If you click On That, it shows you whos online.

You can see which friends are online by clicking the Chat menu at the bottom right of any Facebook page. A green dot will appear next to a friend who is online and available to chat, and a moon will appear next to a friend who is currently idle. On profiles and anywhere else on the site, clicking on a chat icon will start a conversation with that person.
To send a Chat message, simply type your message and then press “Enter” or “Return” on your computer keyboard.
Please note you can only message with your confirmed friends using Facebook Chat.
To let your confirmed Facebook friends know that you are available to chat, click the Chat icon in the bottom right corner of your browser window when signed into Facebook and choose the “Go Online” option from the window that appears. You can click the “Go Offline” link at any time to stop receiving messages through Facebook Chat.

To answer your question, all of the people names in the Chat Box means there online.
If you click on there name, it means you will start chatting once you have typed in a word and
entered it into the box.
Your message will be on there and then if you wanna know if the person is typing back (As in Chatting) there will be a little corner on the bottom of the chat box and there may be a “Talking Bubble” with little dots in it. That means they are typing in.
Chat is very fun because you don’t have to keep sending a email. All you just have to do is type and it will appear on the other persons chat box as well.
